Social Media value?

I have been trying to figure out all this "social media" stuff.  There is Facebook, then Pinterest and of course Websites and emails.  Someone dropped off a flyer promoting yet another new "social media" option at my office yesterday.  When will it end?  What is it that we are trying to accomplish?
I love what I do and would like to focus on the "custom" aspect of my work.
